Our father could often be heard singing around the house. Often he would pace the floor as he sang with a baby in his arms. At other times he would sing as he rocked with a fussy baby. This song was one of his favourites, only when it came to the chorus, he would change the words. When asked why he did that, he would reply that he had far too many blessings to count them one at a time. To this day I don’t know whether he made up the words or learned them from someone else:
Count your blessings, name them two by two
Count your blessings, name them four by four
Count your blessings, name them by the score
And it will surprise you, there are millions more!
On May 1, 1971, Mom and Dad looked after our baby daughter, while we went out to a Youth for Christ meeting. As Chris had been fussy, Dad spent the evening pacing the floor with her while singing and I am sure this hymn would have been included that night.
So – Chris was the last grandchild to hear him sing these words, as that evening he was “Promoted to Glory”.
What are some of the blessings that you counted today?
